Brazilian-made 3D printer was essential in developing personalized doses for pediatric and neonatal patients.

From May 22 to 24, 2025, the 15th Brazilian Congress of Hospital Pharmacy took place in Recife (PE), promoted by the Brazilian Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SBRAFH). The event is one of the most relevant in the field in the country, bringing together professionals, researchers, and leading institutions.
One of the event’s greatest recognitions was granted to pharmacist Elder Oliveira de Paula, who received an honorable mention and had his work selected for oral presentation among the best of the Congress. The study, conducted in partnership between Fiocruz, Farmanguinhos - Laboratório de farmacotécnica experimental and IFF, and UFRJ, was developed with the support of the semi-solid material 3D printer from 593iCAN.
The award-winning research explores the compounding of individualized doses through 3D printing, focusing on pediatrics and neonatology — a promising advancement for personalized pharmaceutical care. Our printer was used in the production of the models and prototypes presented, allowing for volume, geometry, and accuracy control suitable for clinical application in hospital settings.
This achievement reinforces the real impact additive manufacturing technology can have on science. We congratulate researcher Elder Oliveira de Paula and the team from the Pharmacy of the National Institute of Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health Fernandes Figueira (IFF/Fiocruz), Farmanguinhos, and UFRJ for yet another important contribution to innovation in Brazil’s public healthcare system (SUS).
